Therapeutic Coaching®

Therapeutic Coaching® sits between therapy and coaching — helping release the limitations of the past while creating a healthier, more empowered future. It is a mind–body approach that looks beyond symptoms to the deeper patterns driving pain, stress, fatigue and anxiety.

What is Therapeutic Coaching®?

Therapeutic Coaching®, developed by Alex Howard, is a structured, holistic approach that sits between coaching, psychology and health. Rather than focusing only on managing symptoms, it explores the deeper patterns that keep people stuck in cycles of pain, stress, fatigue or anxiety. The premise is that persistent physical and emotional issues are rarely random; they are often driven by nervous system dysregulation, unresolved emotional stress, ingrained behavioural patterns and a disconnection between mind and body.

A key aim is helping the nervous system shift out of long-term survival mode and back into safety and resilience. As regulation improves, tension reduces, energy becomes more stable and emotions can be processed rather than suppressed.

To support this process, Therapeutic Coaching® draws from a range of evidence-informed tools and therapeutic models, including hypnotherapy, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), elements of psychotherapy, and parts-based approaches such as Internal Family Systems. These methods help uncover subconscious patterns, resolve internal conflicts and create new, healthier responses.

What to expect from a Therapeutic Coaching® session

Therapy is offered as a talking therapy, either in person or online via Zoom. The process usually begins with a short introductory call followed by an assessment questionnaire, allowing the work to be tailored to each individual. Ongoing sessions typically take place weekly or fortnightly, providing consistent support and sustainable progress.

The work combines insight with practical change. Sessions are conversational and reflective, but also somatic in nature — meaning attention is given to what is happening in the body as well as the mind. This “somatic talking therapy” helps clients notice how thoughts, emotions and physical sensations interact, creating a bridge between psychological understanding and physical regulation.

This approach integrates naturally with a mind–body physiotherapy perspective. Both recognise that stress and emotional load are held physically, influencing posture, breathing, movement and pain patterns. By physically addressing the body alongside the emotional and behavioural drivers of symptoms, the work supports deeper and more sustainable healing.

Combining Myofascial Release with Therapeutic Coaching®

My preferred approach to healing brings together Myofascial Release (MFR) and Therapeutic Coaching® because both approaches recognise a shared truth: pain and other chronic symptoms rarely have a single cause. They are often maintained by a combination of physical restrictions, nervous system dysregulation, emotional stress and long-standing beliefs, holding patterns and behavioural patterns.

Myofascial release focuses on the body, on the physical restrictions, and the effects it has on the nervous system. Therapeutic Coaching® focuses on the nervous system, emotions and life patterns.

Together, they create a more complete path to healing.
